1) My notebook only has a modem
card, can I connect to the internet from your rooms?
Answer: Yes, our room phones do have an extra jack
for connecting your phone modem cable. However, you should
be aware of two problems with this;
First, this connection goes through our phone switch and is
analog, not digital. Also our phone switch has no way of
knowing you are dialing a modem connection. There are no
charges for 800 numbers, but there will be charges for any
number your modem dials directly.
Second, because this is an analog connection it is EXTREMELY
slow. So slow that some connections cannot be made.
So, the bottom line is yes, you could possibly connect via
our phone system, but expect a very slow connection,
possible charges, and connection problems. It is due to
these problems that we installed our high speed Ethernet
network into all our guest rooms. All you need is a laptop Ethernet network card available at any computer store for
about $35.

2) I use my notebook at work on
our Ethernet network. What do I need to do to connect to the
hotel's Ethernet system?
Answer: When you connect your notebook to the Ethernet jack
in your room, our system utilizes DHCP to assign your
notebook an IP address, and other settings needed to connect
to the internet. Most office environments are set up in this
same manner, so hopefully you won't need to make any changes
to your current settings. However, the first time you
connect to our system, you may need to refresh these address
settings. To do this:
- On your
desktop, click on "start" then "control panel".
- Click on
Network Connections and then RIGHT-CLICK on Local
Area Network (LAN)"
- Click on
properties. Under the box "This connection uses the
following items:"
-
Double-click on Internet Protocols: (TCP/IP)
- Choose
"Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS
server address automatically"
- Click Ok
Ok and exit out of Network Connections and Control
Panel. Your internet should be working now.

3) How can I send and receive
mail using the computers in your bar (or business center)?
Answer: The computers are not configured to
receive individual email. However, there are a number of
free email services which take just a few minutes to
register for. Hotmail.com, Yahoo.com, Gmail.com, just
to name a few. By utilizing these services you will be able
to send and receive email while you stay with us. We suggest
you set up your mailbox ahead of time and let everyone know
your email address in advance of your visit.

4) I have a digital camera and
want to e-mail my friends with pictures. Can this be done?
Answer: Yes, we have two full blown computers at
the Sand Bar. Just bring your disk with pictures to the bar
and ask our bartender for access to one of these computers.
You will need a Hotmail.com (or similar free email account),
then attach your pictures and email away.

5) At work we have a firewall to
protect our notebooks. What protection is there when I
connect my notebook to your Ethernet system?
Answer: None, we have no firewall and NO
protection. The jury is still out on this issue, while many
want protection, many, many others feel a firewall gets in
their way. Many personal firewalls are available, some free,
some at nominal charge. We suggest you have your own
firewall installed, with your own level of protection
desired. Like any DSL or Cable ISP, once your notebook is
plugged in, you are always on line. We strongly suggest you
disconnect or turn off your notebook when not in use and
take steps to provide your own protection against viruses
and vandalism. We only provide a full T1 high speed
connection to the internet, no firewall, no filtering.
